Our
school philosophy is to utilize community resources and normative school
and life activities whenever possible. The Program Leadership Team
worked with a student activity committee to plan and host its first
off-site school prom in June 2005. Decision rules for attendance were
agreed upon, and all Group Home students were eligible to attend if they
were behaving responsibly. Toward that end, all 40 of the Group Home
students attended. A limo was leased, a local community center booked,
catering arranged, and clothing purchased. All students received a new
dress outfit, geared as much to job interviewing as a prom. One student
quote captures the prom energy. A teen client stated to his peers that
was "awful anxious" about attending the prom while getting dressed for
the big event. His best friend replied, "Don't worry. You're supposed to
be anxious about your senior prom!". Staff and students danced and ate
till late, everyone acted more than appropriate, and there was not a
single incident, large or small, at the prom or in the following 3 days.
This will become part of our regular school schedule.
