Description STARS High School - JOB DESCRIPTION School Counselor JOB TITLE: School Counselor LEVEL: 12 NON EXEMPT DEPARTMENT: School DATE CREATED: 03/27/06 SUPERVISOR: Principal LAST REVISION: SUPERVISES: No one JOB SUMMARY: This position will work in the classroom with the teaching staff supporting educational development of emotionally disturbed adolescent students. This is a hands-on, highly interactive position requiring flexibility, compassion, patience and the ability to problem solve. This individual will work in the milieu to address emotional and behavioral issues that are impeding academic performance. Will also provide individual counseling, and family consultation. Will be required to work as a team with the teaching staff and other personnel. Requires outstanding oral and written communication skills, ability to self-motivate and work independently as well as part of the team. Must be a positive role model for students. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education Bachelor’s degree in a Mental Health Field plus four years experience in a mental health field, or Master's degree in a Mental Health Field plus two years experience in a mental health field Experience Above experience should be with children or adolescents (preferred) in residential or outpatient settings. License or Certification Valid California Driver’s License Specialized Skills Ability to interact and communicate both verbally and in writing with seriously emotionally disturbed adolescents, other staff, school staff, employers and the public. Physical Requirements Ability to assess adolescent’s behavior and needs, and intervene as appropriate. POTENTIAL JOB HAZARDS Blood and Body Fluid Contact (Category I) Use of specialized rehabilitation and/or vocational equipment, e.g. dishwasher, vacuum. Operation of vehicle. JOB DESCRIPTION, CONTINUED: School Counselor SAFETY PRECAUTIONS REQUIRED Demonstrated use of Standard Precautions. Demonstrated knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets particular to specialized rehabilitation and/or vocational hazards. Demonstrated safe driving record with DMV and attendance at vehicle orientation. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Supervise 5-10 adolescents and young adults in classroom and milieu. 2. Provide behavioral support to students in classroom setting. This entails observation, analysis, and plan development to remediate inappropriate classroom behavior. This may include conduct problems, inattention, destructibility, depression, etc. Refer to Licensed Certified Professionals when warranted, if additional expertise is needed. 3. Using the agency’s vehicle to provide transportation to and from the work/training site for the adolescents. 4. Monitors clients’ progress in classroom and milieu and assist with providing appropriate motivational techniques. 5. Performs simple evaluations of the adolescent and young adults describing the level of psychosocial impairment, physical health problems, self-care problems, and educational needs as it pertains to employment. 6. Identifies, assesses and mobilizes resources to meet the client’s needs. 7. Keeps open communication (both oral and written) to all parties involved especially between employers and adolescents. 8. Accurately documents in writing each adolescent’s behavior and response to activity on the school and counseling forms. 9. Attends and actively participates in all school and other meetings. 10. Maintains visual awareness of client’s physical and psychiatric limitations, risk behavior and ensures the safety of all clients during program operations. 11. Participates in agency efforts to improve quality. 12.
